Tribute to the Winder

Why has the church clock stopped?

    - Has it broken or is no-one winding it?

The answer is yes and no.

The church clock needs winding every day. After 45 years of personal attention
to this, Mick Bethel the winder decided to retire, which led to a specialist company being called in to advise on automating the process.

Having inspected the clock mechanism, they advised that part of it was in a dangerous condition and the clock should not be wound.

They also advised that the mechanism was worth preserving because of its antiquity, so that simply replacing it with a modem electric equivalent was not the way to go.

What now needs to be done is to repair the mechanism, service and re-furbish the clock, re-enclose it to keep the grime out and fit electric autowinders.

So... the problem is being addressed, and the intention is to get the old ticker beating again.
